Found a Stray
If you find a stray dog or cat visibly suffering with extreme health conditions or injuries requiring immediate veterinary attention, or if the animal is highly aggressive, please call VHS immediately (787.741.0209). We’ll help you help this animal.
If you find a stray dog or cat that is not suffering from a severe medical condition, we ask that you do three things:
Attempt to find the animal’s owner
Most wandering animals in Vieques have homes. Bringing them to the shelter decreases their chances of being reunited with their family. Please take photos and post them, along with the animal’s location, on the following Facebook pages: Vieques Peeps, Apoya lo Nuestro Vieques, What’s Happening Vieques and Vieques Lost and Found Pets.Consider temporarily fostering the animal or finding it a foster home
Call Us
Leave a message. Provide VHS with your number, information about the animal, and its foster location. We’ll get back to you ASAP to help arrange for a health evaluation and vaccine appointment to ensure the animal is safe for placement in a foster home, and we’ll put it on our waiting list for surrender, transport, or adoption.
WHAT IF THE ANIMAL IS NOT ACCEPTED FOR IMMEDIATE SURRENDER?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!! WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER. VHS is committed to our island animals and their welfare. If an animal is not immediately accepted for admission, VHS will help arrange for a health evaluation and vaccine appointment to ensure the animal is safe for placement in a foster home. We will also add the animal to our intake list and call as soon as we arrange the next transport of shelter animals for adoption off the island. Then, we can bring more dogs and cats into the shelter.
