Our little island of Vieques, Puerto Rico offers warm and sunny days year-round, beautiful beaches, and the chance for a service-minded veterinarian to really make a difference on an island with limited services, a large animal presence, and a significant under-served population.
VHS seeks a veterinarian to join our small, dedicated team and serve our non-profit clinic. VHS is the island’s only open-admission shelter and low-cost community veterinary clinic. Historically, we have focused on spay/neuter, vaccination, and wellness services for cats and dogs. But we recently launched an exciting growth initiative. As the only non-profit clinic on the island offering regular operating hours, we pride ourselves on serving in a community where animals might otherwise go without veterinary care or medical intervention, especially in the event of an emergency. We are committed to being a full-service, full-time veterinary clinic and recently added IDEXX laboratory equipment to our practice, in addition to our surgical and wellness services. Our clinic is currently staffed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am-5pm with a veterinarian, veterinary technician, and veterinary assistant. We plan to extend services with a full-time veterinarian or another part-time addition to the team. Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine spay/neuter and dental surgeries on owned and shelter animals
- Participate in periodic high-volume spay-a-thons and free vaccine clinics
- Provide routine wellness exams and vaccinations to owned and shelter animals
- Diagnose, treat, and manage both routine and critical medical cases, which may include more advanced surgeries and after-care
- Maintain complete electronic medical records
- Interact with clients in a positive, professional, and empathetic manner
- Support client and staff education related to animal care and wellness
- Maintain a professional and confidential work environment
- Evaluate and treat emergency medical cases, as needed and assigned (possibly after-hours)
Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaker preferred.
